RLN8-410 HDD upgrade: capacity by hardware version

Quick answer

Identify the RLN8-410 hardware revision before choosing a drive. Reolink's expansion table lists different per-drive limits for different revisions. A total system capacity is not the capacity of one supported disk, and an HDD sold with a new recorder is not necessarily its maximum supported upgrade.

Read the per-drive limit separately from the total

H3MB18 / N2MB02 / N3MB016 TB12 TB
H3MB16 / H3MB024 TB8 TB

Each listed group uses one internal drive and one external eSATA drive. These limits apply to the documented revision groups, not to every recorder carrying the RLN8-410 name.

Choose a complete storage arrangement

Reolink's HDD selection page recommends tested models or an appropriate surveillance/enterprise drive within the recorder's capacity limit. Its expansion instructions describe a separately powered enclosure for an external 3.5-inch SATA disk, connected by eSATA rather than USB. Check drive, enclosure, cable and power together: buying only a larger disk does not complete an external expansion.

Check your setup

  1. Identify the hardware revision

Copy the full hardware identifier from System Information and match it exactly to the official storage table. If yours is absent or documentation disagrees, ask Reolink before ordering. Do not substitute a similar model name or channel count.

  2. Plan the storage arrangement

Estimate the retention you need from actual recording bitrates and schedules. Decide whether replacing the internal HDD or adding a supported external one meets that requirement. Keep per-drive and total limits in your purchase notes.

  3. Protect recordings before installation

Export important recordings before replacing a disk. Follow Reolink's power-off installation procedure, then verify that the intended drive appears in Storage. Do not disconnect internal HDD cables while the NVR is powered.

  4. Check the disk and test playback

Only format the intended disk after checking that its contents may be erased and that required recordings are backed up. Reolink's expansion procedure then calls for a reboot. Make a short recording and play it back before relying on the upgrade.
