Reolink PoE cable length: Cat5e, Cat6 and connection checks

Check Reolink's Ethernet cable recommendations, plan a camera run, protect the connector and diagnose a link that fails on a longer cable.

Quick answer

Reolink's Ethernet guidance recommends up to 80 m for Cat5 and up to 100 m for Cat5e or higher between a camera and its network device. Treat these as installation recommendations, not a guarantee that any cable assembly or power source will work at that distance.

Check the cable and both endpoints

The official guidance covers Reolink PoE cameras and other listed products with Ethernet ports. It specifies eight-pin Ethernet cabling and T-568B connectors, with Cat5, Cat5e, Cat6 and Cat7 categories listed. A higher category alone is not permission to exceed the stated distance or evidence that the attached recorder supports the camera.

Protect the connection as well as the camera body

Reolink describes its weatherproof cap as protection for the Ethernet connection against water entry. Use the cap and installation instructions appropriate to your camera and connector. An enclosure weather rating should not be treated as proof that an exposed cable joint is protected. Include connector protection and an accessible test point in the installation plan before final mounting.

Check your setup

  1. Write down the intended route length, cable category and endpoints: camera to a PoE switch, or camera to an NVR camera port. Keep this cable decision separate from switch power budgeting and the recorder's supported-camera list.
  2. If the camera fails on the installed run, Reolink's PoE troubleshooting recommends trying a known-working network cable and a known-working recorder port. Our suggested comparison is to start with a short test cable and then change one item at a time.
  3. If the short-cable test succeeds but the installed run fails, record the result and inspect the run and terminations. This narrows the investigation; it does not by itself prove whether length, a damaged connector, the cable or another connection is responsible.
  4. Before final mounting, verify a stable image and saved test recording in the intended setup. Document the tested route, power source and camera model so a later fault can be compared with a known working configuration.

What this does not establish

This guide makes no exact-model PoE power claim and does not certify outdoor suitability, lightning protection or an extender arrangement. Do not assume a passive coupler creates another powered Ethernet segment. For a route beyond the documented length, obtain a designed network/power solution rather than relying on cable category alone.
