Can you add a PoE switch to an RLN8-410?

Understand direct NVR-port and router-side switch topologies, Reolink’s RLN8-410 warning and the separate PoE budget check.

Quick answer

Yes, but choose the topology carefully. Reolink says placing a PoE switch between cameras and an RLN8-410 PoE camera port is possible but not recommended. A router-side PoE switch is a separate documented wiring option. Neither wiring pattern increases the recorder’s supported camera count.

Two different ways to wire the switch

Reolink’s between-camera-and-NVR guide advises no more than eight cameras on a switch feeding an RLN8-410 and discourages this topology for RLN8-410/RLN16-410. Its separate router-side guide shows cameras connected to a PoE switch on the network, then added to the NVR on the same LAN. Reolink warns against plugging the NVR LAN port and that between-NVR switch LAN into the router at the same time.

What remains to check after wiring

A camera connected via the network may remain available as a separate device in Reolink Client/App, whereas a camera attached directly to an NVR port behaves differently. Confirm the exact model and firmware for needed NVR features after it appears on the network.

Check your setup

  1. Sketch the intended cables: switch into an NVR camera port or switch into the router/LAN. The two layouts have different operational behavior.
  2. For a switch feeding the recorder port, follow Reolink’s RLN8-410 caveat; do not assume more switch ports create additional NVR channels.
  3. For router-side cameras, supply PoE externally, ensure camera and NVR are on the same LAN, then add each camera at the NVR monitor.
  4. Check each camera’s PoE standard, per-port and shared switch budgets and the recorder’s hardware revision before purchase.

What this does not establish

The eight-camera advice is a wiring caution, not proof of eight compatible cameras or a way around revision, power and channel limits.
