PoE or plug-in WiFi for a Reolink RLN8-410 setup?

Compare wiring, power and adding steps for PoE and plug-in WiFi cameras on an RLN8-410; keep battery models separate.

Quick answer

Choose PoE if you can run Ethernet and want the RLN8-410 PoE port to power the camera. Choose plug-in WiFi when a separate power outlet and reliable LAN connection suit the installation. A WiFi camera plugged into an NVR Ethernet port still needs its own power according to Reolink.

Connection and power differ

Reolink’s new-UI setup guide shows a PoE camera connected directly to the recorder, powered by its PoE port, or connected through the same router with separate PoE power. A plug-in WiFi camera needs a separate power supply and can join the NVR over the LAN; one with an Ethernet port can also use that port to connect but is not thereby PoE-powered. Battery WiFi cameras have different NVR and access rules.

A practical two-location example

For a gate with Ethernet but no outlet, direct PoE can avoid local mains. For an interior point with an outlet but no cable path, plug-in WiFi can simplify routing but still needs reliable network coverage. These are wiring decisions, not comparative claims about image quality, price or compatibility.

Check your setup

  1. For each mounting point, decide whether you can route Ethernet and whether you have a suitable outlet or external PoE supply.
  2. Verify the exact camera type: PoE, mains-powered WiFi and battery-powered WiFi are not interchangeable despite similar model names.
  3. If connecting over the router, configure the camera on the same LAN as the NVR and check for an available NVR channel at its connected monitor.
  4. Check the RLN8-410 hardware revision, supported model and feature scope before buying; camera power and NVR integration are separate checks.

What this does not establish

Reolink documents battery-powered WiFi separately; this guide does not assert that every battery model works on every RLN8-410 revision.
